Terezin is a small town 35 miles Northwest of Prague created in 1780 by
Joseph II, son of Maria Terezia. The town was formed to protect Prague against
assaults from the North as had occurred when the Swedes invaded and devastated
the capital. He named it for his beloved mother.
This village was not used much militarily in subsequent years. Its military
fortress, a thick-walled star-shaped structure, held the assassins of Archduke
Ferdinand and his wife. This building was used as the children's barracks
when Terezin became Terezienstadt under German control during the Holocaust.
